Despite the number of guns in the USA (the vast majority of people don’t own handguns), it is very rare that one needs, or is able to use their gun in a home invasion, or for any form of personal protection. In fact, home invasions are not that common. If someone invaded my home, my first choice would be escape. If I had a gun, my second choice would be to warn them to leave. If they were armed with a gun and I couldn’t escape, I’d use it if necessary. If they were not armed at all, I’d have to make an assessment as to how likely it would be I could overpower them.
If others were home who could not escape, my threshold for using a gun would be lower.
Despite the right to protect one’s home, a handgun very rarely comes in handy.
