Elara Yes, that’s what I mean. And I agree, they’re all offensive. I don’t hear them much, but am struck when I do. “Retard” is used every so often. The other two I hear from time to time. I told a friend where ‘gyp’ comes from. He had no idea it was derogatory. The other two clearly are.

Those are pejorative terms and never should be use under any circumstances. Unfortunately many people used offensive terms to describe people who are different from them.

I never ever use the R-word against anyone who are in fact mentally challenged. I occasionally use it against people who do not have any mental issues, but do or say something extremely stupid. Like when my boyfriend genuinely believed that my girls’ night out was an excuse to fool around with other guys.

Pultost I have also let the retard word slip occasionally…but I always feel bad because my best friend’s brother has downs syndrome. So I definitely check my tongue when I am around him.

I don’t seem to call people “retard”, but among friends I have described situations or other things as “retarded”. I’m not saying it’s great to do so. But it can be a habit, and around certain people I’m close to I tend to say things I wouldn’t say in most other situations. As for the other two terms, I don’t believe I’ve ever said them.

HeyCameron I understand some words just seem to fit a situation perfectly, but it comes from a bad place. When I was growing up, my mom was only picky about two things: don’t put the toilet paper roll on the dispenser backwards, and don’t use legit medical conditions in a derogatory way, as that is an insult to the people who have the condition. I thought that makes sense. “Jew” and “gyp” are straight out antisemitic/ethnic slurs, although some people are unaware of it.
