Someone showed me a map that showed rates by state. As I remember, it was less common in states with a lot of immigrants (since they typically don’t do it) and less common in areas where health insurance wouldn’t have paid. I guess the thought is that people are more likely to do it when it’s covered. Likewise, if people have to pay extra, some perhaps couldn’t afford it or think harder if it’s truly essential.
The other twist was that it only covered during the original hospital stay.
Example: State has 40% circ rate. There, 4/10 random baby boys leaving the hospital after being born wouldn’t have the skin. Likewise, some other state is 90% circ rate…9/10 random boys would leave the hospital without skin.
Obviously the small minority of boys who got it done later on would count as not snipped.
